Ipswich Hawks volleyball team have started the season with a bang, winning all three of their games and losing just one set in the Suffolk league Division one.

The toughest tests are yet to come with matches in the New Year against Stowmarket and Newmarket, teams which finished first and second in the league last season.

Ipswich have traditionally had a number of foreign players and this year is no different with Italian Gabrielle Corliano, Dutchman Marc Wennink and German Andreas Koch.

Volleyball is played much more widely in the rest of the world and often the overseas players bring valued experience.

This is definitely the case at present with the overseas players complementing the Englishmen Carl Sheldrick, Tom Vaughan, Eric Negus and Rob Hughes to produce a solid unit.

Ipswich Moles volleyball team also started the season well, winning their first two matches in Division Two. Unfortunately they have struggled just lately, but as the majority of the team are still U16s, the experience of playing matches can only help to improve their game.

The Moles are a mixture of youth and experience with youngsters Tom Atkinson, James Hitching, Robert Negus and Adam Fischer being helped by the experienced Derek Elliston, Richard Damant, Dean Howell and Jana Sizer.

The team is always looking for new players, whether you have played the game before or would like to give it a go simply turn up to a training session, which are held on Wednesday nights between 8pm and 10pm at Maidenhall Sports Centre. Training starts again in the New Year on Wednesday, January 2.
