Hole-in-one joy for Davey

PAUL Davey will not forget the day that he holed in one in the recent Suffolk Winter Alliance meeting at Bungay for two reasons.

Firstly, ten-handicapper Paul, a member at Stowmarket, was a late replacement for Trevor Holly, who had to withdraw the day before the meeting because of work commitments.

Secondly, not only did Paul hole his tee shot at the 156 yards par-three fourth hole at Bungay, but his partner, Stowmarket assistant John Markham, almost did the same with his tee shot at the same hole.

Paul said: "I was really pleased with the eight iron I hit and the ball took one bounce before disappearing into the hole.

"Then John played an equally good tee shot that also looked like going in, but it bounced and finished six feet from the pin."

It was the first ace that Paul has had in competition golf, but he did have one other at the par three 18th hole at Stowmarket while playing by himself.

"I had only been playing golf for a year," said Paul, "When I was playing a few holes by myself. But when I walked on to the green Chris Aldred, the former Stowmarket professional, who had been standing nearby, told me the ball was in the hole."

Paul has been a member of the Stowmarket Tolly Cobbold side for the past four years and two years ago they reached the semi-final.

"I don't whether I'll be in the side this year," said Paul, who has played in a couple of recent trials.
