WOODBRIDGE Town enjoyed some good success in the older age groups of their annual five-a-side tournament.

Over 650 youths aged between seven and 15 formed the 93 teams who participated in the two-day competition.

The tournament was the largest yet hosted by the Ridgeons League Premier Division club and was hosted on six pitches at Farlingaye High School.

On the Saturday morning the youngest of the players represented their clubs, many for the first time, in the under sevens and under eights age group.

All of the 112 young footballers from Woodbridge Kesgrave, Framlingham, Achilles, Witnesham, Wickham Market, and St Johns were awarded a certificate for their efforts and participation.

Two Woodbridge Town teams contested the U14 finals, with the club's Eastern Junior Alliance Sunday squad the winners for the second year running.

Elsewhere, the guesting West Ham United were victorious in the girls' U15s section.

On the Sunday, seven different clubs contested the six finals. Framlingham Town defeated Woodbridge in the U9s section, while St Johns won the U10s group with a finals win over Witnesham Wasps.

The U11 final was a local derby in which Kesgrave Kestrels defeated neighbours Martlesham, while in the U13s group Martlesham won a tense penalty shoot out in the final after extra time against Kirton Kestrels.

Host club Woodbridge Town took the honours in the U15 section, their Sunday team once again beating their Saturday equivalents, while in the U13 age group Martlesham rounded off a magnificent weekend of youth football with victory over Whitton United.

Woodbridge Town operates 22 youth teams for boys and girls aged between eight and 16 along with Saturday morning coaching sessions for five to seven year old boys and girls.

The club is running one day coaching courses during the last week in August which is open to all ages and abilities. For further details visit the club website at www.woodbridgetownfc.com.
