Ipswich 3 Derby 0

MANAGER Joe Royle pulled a master stroke at Portman Road this afternoon to win an all First Division FA Cup Third Round tie.

Ipswich beat a team from outside the Conference for the first time in four years in this competition when three second-half goals saw off a plucky Derby County managed by ex-Blues' boss George Burley.

The contest went nowhere in particular in the first period on a cold afternoon with little to warm the spirits until Royle made an inspired double substitutition.

The Town boss made a few changes as he promised, but when he brought on a rested Jim Magilton and muscleman Shefki Kuqi in the early stages of the second period the game changed dramatically.

From being an even encounter Ipswich immediately took control and ended worthy winners through goals from Richard Naylor, Tommy Miller and late on Kuqi.

Derby's Spanish striker Manel went close twice towards the end but otherwise Ipswich did well in the final half and manager Royle will be pleased with a clean sheet and a good win after two previous home defeats.
