SUFFOLK stars fell victim to late swoops in the first round of the Steradent Womens All England bowls pairs championship at Royal Leamington Spa last night.
Shirley Allen and Ann Cable from the Marlborough Club, Ipswich seemed to be coasting to victory when they led 17-9 with seen ends of their first round clash to play against Birmingham's Audrey Stephens and Chris Grigg.
However, the Brummies pounced with 12 shots over the next six ends to lead 21-19 and although Alan and Cable finished with a single, they were edged out 21-20.
Meanwhile, in another opening round clash Hadleigh's Sheila Poulton and Judy Saunders led 15-11 against Pershaw, Worcester duo Pat Reeves and Val Johnson with just two ends to play…. only to see the opposition charge back with a five and a single to snatch the match 17-15.
