Ipswich claim sprint kings crown

IPSWICH club swimmers dominated their home sprint meet – stealing many of the age group titles for the popular event.

In a one-day championship at Crown Pools, hundreds of the region's competitive swimmers tested their skills over a short-course distance of just 50 metres.

The sprint meet, which has been running for several years, attracted promising contenders from the Under 11s to the Open category.

Each one had submitted times for the latest sprint event, but no 'cut-off' levels were enforced.

Clubs who took part in the tense Sunday event included Sudbury, Deben, Leiston and Stowmarket, with one challenger coming from as far afield as Runnymede to take part.

In all, eleven clubs were a part of the 'splash and dash' event.

However, it was home club Ipswich who really impressed during the two-session afternoon meet.

Many of the club's swimmers claimed the winning age-group points tally, also breaking numerous personal bests in the process.

William Boosey, Sean McNamee, and Chris Paine all stole first place in their respective age categories for the men's events.

Meanwhile, Rebecca Harris and Susanna Davis stamped their authority on their age-group performances for the female contingent.

Given the nature of point-scoring in a sprint event, the meet proved exceptionally close for many of the challengers.

In the Men's 11 and under category, a final result saw just two points separate some spectacular swims by Runnymede's Matt Scott and Deben's Ben Davies.

Davies eventually finished two points adrift of Scott's 33 point score.

Likewise, Deben's Mark Stevens fell just two points adrift of triumph in his 12/13 years category – again claiming 31 points to a 33 point score by William Boosey.

Notably, Deben swimmers have been impressing the crowds at both league galas and on the Open Meet circuit this year.

Their contingent certainly proved their strong recent form on Sunday and a worthy performance by Roxanne Johnson in the 14/15 years age group certainly deserved recognition.

Ipswich Swimming Club spokeswoman, Karen Keeley, said the event had once again proved an impressive stage for the region's talent.

"We're always really pleased to see so many people wanting to take part in the sprint event at Ipswich," she said. "It has developed a great reputation and is one of the events that attracts a great number of swimmers from all local clubs.

"The standard of competition on Sunday was something for both the swimmers and their coaches to be incredibly proud about."

Such was the format of the gala that all swimmers received prizes for taking part – ranging from a water bottle, to a £10 Mick McNeil voucher for age-group category winners.

She added: "We're seeing a really high level of swimming in this area and events like our meet prove that without a doubt.

"It's an added bonus that both the swimmers and the spectators found the event to be a thrilling competition with a lot of tense drama.

"We're already looking forward to next year."
