Ipswich Town have announced the signing of defender Adam Webster from Portsmouth.

The 21-year-old centre back joins on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee – but reported to be manager Mick McCarthy’s most expensive signing during his time in Suffolk.

As part of the move Town academy player Matt Clarke has joined Portsmouth on a permanent basis, having been on loan there last season.

The Blues confirmed the transfer at 3pm today on their Twitter feed and official website, Webster becoming the club’s first summer signing.

He will officially move to Portman Road on July 1, the club said.

In a statement on its website Ipswich Town added: “England U19 international Webster, 21, will sign a three-year contract with the option of a further 12 month stay in a deal that will see him become the most expensive signing in Mick McCarthy’s tenure at Portman Road.
