ALLAN Hunter today opened his heart to Ipswich Town fans and admitted he is still reeling from the tremendous reception players from Sir Bobby Robson's era received at Portman Road on Saturday.

“Maybe, hopefully, I gave Ipswich fans some pleasure during my time as a player at this great club,” said Hunter.

“Now they have returned the compliment to me. The tide has turned.

“Perhaps Town supporters have been fortunate to enjoy the success they have over the years.

“But as a player I am lucky to have experienced what I did on Saturday.”

Hunter said he found it hard to keep a tear at bay as he stood around the centre circle while a rendition of 'My Way' - one of Sir Bobby's favourites - was sung.

“And looking around most of the former players were similarly affected,” added Hunter, known affectionately as 'Big Al' from his time as a central defensive stalwart.

“It was a mind-blowing reception we received and I would like to thank every Town fan.

“It started when Mick Mills laid a wreath at Sir Bobby's statue outside the ground on behalf of the players he managed at Ipswich.

“I had to compose myself when spontaneous applause from the supporters looking on broke out.

“It was a highly emotional day and much more than we expected. The only down side was the result.”

Former players and special guests were invited to a reception in honour of Sir Bobby after the game also attended by Lady Robson and two of her three sons Mark and Paul.
