FORMER Ipswich Town ace Kevin Beattie was today recovering in hospital after his health took a turn for the worst.
The ex-Blues and England defender is believed to have been treated by medics at Ipswich Hospital after suffering from pancreatitis.
However, The Evening Star understands his condition is not thought to be life threatening.
Beattie, who was famously voted Ipswich's all-time greatest player in a Star poll, would have been at today's match between Town and Derby County had he been well.
The 54-year-old suffered with pancreatitis around 11 years ago.
Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas.
Beattie made more than 200 appearances for Ipswich during a distinguished ten-year career, as well as representing England on nine occasions.
He would have played for his country more regularly but his career was dogged by injury.
The respect Ipswich fans have for Beattie is mirrored by his former manager Sir Bobby Robson, who famously referred to the Cumbrian-born star as the best English player he has ever seen.
Popular Beattie still lives in Ipswich and cares for his wife Maggie, who sufferes from multiple sclerosis.
