I want to get back scoring, says new Ipswich Town striker Conor Sammon

New signing Conor Sammon is determined he can hit the goal trail at Ipswich Town, despite having a less than impressive scoring record.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international striker has joined the Blues from Championship rivals Derby County on a season-long loan, after finding his chances limited under Rams boss Steve McLaren.

Sammon hit 10 goals in league 82 games for Derby, following his £1.2m move from Wigan, having netted just once in 32 Premier League games for the Latics.

A total of 11 goals in 114 is hardly prolific, but 61 of the those appearances came as a substitute.

“My ambition is to score goals here and help the team and see where it takes us and myself,” said Sammon, who could make his full Town debut at Birmingham City tonight, having appeared as a late substitute in Saturday’s defeat at Reading.

“I judge myself on goals and I want to score every game. If I don’t I am disappointed.

“Last season (at Derby) was disappointing but it’s made me hungrier to train even harder, to go and hit the ground running here. Who knows how many goals I can get?”

He added: “I enjoy running in behind defenders and playing on the shoulder. I’ll give it 100% every week and work hard for the team.

“I’ll sacrifice myself if I need to come back and defend but ultimately I want to get back scoring.”

Sammon’s arrival has allowed manager boss Mick McCarthy to send Jack Marriott on loan to League Two Carlisle, while Frank Nouble is now available for transfer or a loan.

On the two strikers, McCarthy said: “He’s (Nouble) not daft, he’s seen other players come in and I would not treat him with anything but respect.

“Jack (Marriott) needs to play some football, plus when we have a two-week break they will have games so he can still be playing.”
