Colchester United have signed Ipswich Town right-back Elliott Hewitt on a month’s loan deal.

The 20-year-old Wales Under-21 international began the season playing in midfield for the Blues but has not featured for Town since making a late substitute appearance in the home win against Rotherham last month.

Hewitt, who will provide competition for Sean Clohessy, has made 16 appearances for Town since being signed by Paul Jewell in the summer of 2012, and spent time on-loan at Gillingham last season, playing 20 games, many of them in midfield.

Hewitt could make his U’s debut in the JP Trophy clash against Gillingham at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, tomorrow night, and his loan will also take in league games against Fleetwood, Scunthorpe, Chesterfield, Swindon and Port Vale.

Blues boss Mick McCarthy revealed recently that he was looking to get Hewitt some first-team football during the international break which sees Town without a game until October 18.
