Ipswich Town striker Alan Lee and former Blues’ midfielder Simon Milton are cycling from London to Amsterdam for charity, and are looking for new recruits to join them.

The duo, representing “Team ITFC”, will join figures from every other Football League club, cycling 150 miles over two days, to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

Howewer, in addition to supporting the Football League’s chosen charity, Team ITFC will also be raising funds for the club’s academy during the event, which is being held between June 6 and 8.

A number of local businesses have already signed up, including Elmy’s Cycles who will give away a hybrid bike – worth around £1,000 – to the Team ITFC member that raises the most money.

The cyclists will ride from Leyton Orient’s Matchroom Stadium to Harwich, from where they will be transported by boat to Holland overnight, before resuming their journey from Hook Island to Ajax’s Amsterdam Arena.

Mr Lee, who is a current player-coach at Portman Road, said: “It didn’t take much for Simon to persuade me to take part and I really got into cycling over the last couple of years.

“Cancer having affected my family, as it has Simon’s, while we are also raising money for the academy, which is something that is also close to my heart.

“There is no better way to raise money than by having fun in what will hopefully be fine weather, but it will be hard worl though.

“I have invested in a road bike and cycling is a great way for us old footballers to stay fit, especially with our achy joints!

“Long runs can be a bit dull and quite painful on the joints, whereas I could cycle all say.”

Mr Milton, the club’s Academy Sponsorship Manager, stressed that those taking part do not have to be expert cyclists and expert advice would be given from “Team ITFC’s” cycle partner Elmy’s Cycles.

“You don’t have to be an elite cyclist to take part and it is a good challenge,” he added.

“It’s a well orgainsed event, Prostate Cancer will have a support team on hand, while Elmy Cycles will also give expert advice to those wishing to take part.

“As an extra incentive and to make the fundraising competitve, Elmy’s have also donated a lovely blue and white racing bike for me to train and do the challenge on.

“Whoever raises the most money will then be presented with that and go away with a fantastic bike.”
