Paul Hurst says he’s not going to abandon his principles in search of his first win as Ipswich Town manager.

The Blues are yet to register a victory seven games into the campaign following home draws against Blackburn, Aston Villa and Norwich, as well as narrow margin away defeats to Rotherham, Exeter, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday.

Speaking ahead of this afternoon’s clash at fellow Championship strugglers Hull City, another team finding their feet following a massive summer overhaul, Hurst said: “At the minute it’s very much a case of stick with what we’re doing.

“There might be some people out there who think ‘well it’s not working at the minute’. I don’t think it’s far off working.

“Do we decide, ‘let’s just take no chances whatsoever, kick the ball as far up the pitch as possible and run after it?’ Is that going to bring us a win? Who knows.

“What I would say is we’ve got to have the attitude to win at all costs. In the Norwich game, for instance, when we’re in front and, yes it’s not the last minute, but if the ball is there to be cleared then clear the ball.

“It’s just striking a little bit of balance between the times to play and not. Overall though it’s about keep doing a lot of what we have been doing.”

He continued: “We know what the biggest stat is, and that doesn’t make good reading at the minute, but a lot of the stats look alright.

“I’m watching back the games and trying to be honest with myself about what I’m looking at. And the stats are backing up my thoughts that what I see is on the right lines. In time, given a similar run of performances, I think we win games of football.

“The longer the wait goes on it can become a little bit more of a mental issue, but at the minute I see a confident group of players with a good spirit about them. Hopefully they’ll get that reward on Saturday.”

Reflecting on his first transfer window at the club, in which 12 players were signed, Hurst said: “Some of the players will take longer to settle than others, but I believe that they can all go on and be good players for Ipswich Town.

“Overall I am very satisfied. Now it’s about really trying to get them moulded into a team.”
