It may be almost 14 years since Ipswich Town reached the play-off final at Wembley, on their way to promotion to the Premier League, but the memories have not faded.

Saturday’s opponents at Portman Road, Bolton Wanderers, played their part in one of the finest games witnessed in Suffolk, losing 5-3 on the night and 7-5 on aggregate, following a 2-2 draw in the play-off semi-final first leg at the Reebok Stadium.

In the second leg, Jim Magilton was the Town hero, rescuing the Blues from the brink with his hat-trick goal in the 90th minute. He had twice equalised efforts from Dean Holdsworth, before his third, which cancelled out Allan Johnstone’s strike, sent the game into extra-time.

After Wanderers had Mike Whitlow red-carded on 90 minutes, a dramatic extra half hour saw Jamie Clapham give Town the lead from the penalty spot on 94 minutes, before Robbie Elliott became the second visiting player to see red.

Martijn Reuser sealed victory and a trip to the Twin Towers with a goal 11 minutes from time and he was to go on to become one of the heroes against Barnsley, scoring a 90th-minute clincher, in a 4-2 victory.
