A former Ipswich defender has hit out at footballing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo after comments he made about the Icelandic national team.

Real Madrid forward Ronaldo accused Iceland of having a “small mentality” and lacked ambition after drawing 1-1 with his Portugal side at Euro 2016 yesterday.

But Hermann Hreidarsson, who played more than 100 games for Ipswich Town between 2000 and 2003 and won 89 caps for Iceland, told BBC Radio 5 Live the former Manchester United man was being petty.

“He didn’t fancy it on the day and he just got beaten up,” Hreidarsson said on-air. “It’s petty in a way. He’s a sore loser obviously.

“If he would have worked as hard as every Icelandic player, he wouldn’t have had to say anything because I’m sure he would have got his rewards.”

Nani opened the scoring for Portugal in the first half before Birkir Bjarnason equalised with a volley in the 50th minute in the two sides’ opening Group F game in France.
