Ipswich Town will be without Gwion Edwards for tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup clash with Exeter but Teddy Bishop and Danny Rowe could return from injury.

The Welsh winger aggravated a quad issue in Saturday’s loss at Rotherham and will not be risked at St James Park, while Bishop and Rowe could return from their hamstring lay-offs from the bench.

Flynn Downes is also likely to return to the squad having missed Saturday’s game through illness, with Hurst indicating he is likely to field a strong side against the League Two Grecians.

“He (Downes) is due to train and I think he’s feeling better so he should be part of the squad tomorrow night,” Hurst said.

“Gwion was feeling his quad a little bit at the end of last week, but was fine. He felt it again (at Rotherham), which is why he came off towards the end of the game so I don’t think we’ll be risking him.

“I don’t believe it should be an issue going into the weekend.

“Teddy Bishop and Danny Rowe will travel with us and we’ll see how they go in training and how they’re feeling generally.

“They possibly could be involved although I haven’t made a definite decision on that. It will obviously be from the bench if they are involved because they’re not at the point of being ready to start yet.

“I want everyone fit and that makes my life more difficult in terms of picking the team and the subs. I think any manager would like to be in that position rather than having them in the treatment room.”

Hurst believes Bishop, who played just four games last season, can still be a real asset to the Ipswich squad while the Blues boss admitted he has been a fan of winger Rowe prior to his arrival at Portman Road.

“Teddy is very well thought of and from what I can see, rightly so,” Hurst said.

“He’s clearly had issues with his injuries but if we can keep him fit he’ll be a good player for us. I’m sure he’s sick of being in the treatment room and wants to play.

“I’m really hoping we can get him back on the training pitch and that he can do well for us.

“I know a bit about Danny anyway, from Macclesfield, and he showed in a game against Cambridge what he can do.

“It’s just about trying to build on his fitness and get him to a point where he’s really in contention.

“I think they both have qualities which mean they can be real additions to the team.”

Emyr Huws (knee) and Tom Adeyemi (Achilles) are not yet ready to return, with Hurst admitting the latter is still considerably short of fitness and not in contention.

“Out of those lads we’ve been speaking about (Bishop and Rowe) Emyr is the furthest away,” Hurst said. “He didn’t train on Saturday and felt a little fatigued but I understand he’s back out there again today.

“Hopefully he’s still moving in the right direction.”

On Adeyemi, Hurst said: “He’s still a long way off a return.

“Progress seems to have halted really. He’s done little bits of work but nothing more than that, so he’s one who certainly isn’t in my thoughts from a fitness point of view.”
