IPSWICH Town have targeted Barcelona striker José Emilio Guerra.

Blues boss Jim Magilton has said he is keen to sign the prolific 26-year-old attacker after watching him play for Barcelona B.

Magilton said: “If I could get Guerra I would. We have made an enquiry to Barcelona about him and we will see what happens.

“I have been to see him play and he is a top quality striker who has a tremendous goal-scoring record.”

Although Guerra has played in just one first team game for the Spanish giants, a Catalunya Cup semi-final against Girona, it is understood the La Liga are asking around £1million for the player.

Town face competition from QPR and for the striker who has

He moved to the Nou Camp after banging in a startling 41 goals for Real Zaragoza B side during the 2006-07 Tercera Division Group 17 season.

Last season he netted, taking his career stats to 86 goals in 132 matches, and another league title after finishing top of Group 5.

Guerra started his career at Palamos CF, then went to Linares CD, CE Sabadell and Granada CF, before Zaragoza.

With so many Barça players involved in Euro 2008, there is a possibility that Guerra will be part of the Spanish side's pre-season trip to Scotland in July when they will play friendlies against Hibs and Dundee United.

Although a couple of defenders are his priority, Magilton is looking at bringing in a striker with Shola Ameobi and Kevin Phillips also high on his list.

Magilton has already confirmed though that David Healy, who was mentioned in today's honours' list, is no longer a target for Town.

The Blues are also in the market for a number one keeper with Shane Supple as back up after returning on loan from Falkirk.

But Magilton feels he is not far away from his ideal squad and is not looking to make wholesale changes.

He added: “There are not that many really good players out there that are available. We are always looking to raise the bar but they have to be the right players.

“We have identified who we want and have not strayed too far away from those.”

Magilton's first summer signing will be Pim Balkestein who is expected to come over to England early part of next week to finalise his personal terms and complete a medical.
