Jonny Williams played 45 minutes on his comeback, for Ipswich Town’s under-23s, as a young Blues side defeated Bristol City, 2-1, at Playford Road, on Monday afternoon.

Wales international Williams, on-loan from Crystal Palace, has been out of action since landing awkwardly in Town’s Championship win at Wigan in December – the 23-year-old undergoing surgery on his shoulder as a result.

It was England under-17 international, Ben Morris, who grabbed the goals for the Blues, the youngster scoring at the start of each half for Gerard Nash’s side.

Bristol City reduced the arrears with 25 minutes left but a Town team, which also included Andre Dozzell and Adam McDonnell – both youngsters having had tastes of the first team – held on for victory.

The under-23s have now gone five games without a defeat.

Town: Crowe, Woolfenden, C. Smith, Webber, Nydam, McDonnell, Blanchfield (Folami, 90), Dozzell, Williams (McKendry, 45), McLoughlin, Morris. Subs not used: Hayes, Ndaba, McGavin.
