BLUES top scorer Jon Walters believes sixth-placed Ipswich are in the perfect position to mount a promotion push.

Walters hit his 12th goal of the season in the 2-1 home win over Blackpool that opened up a four point gap to seventh place Burnley with Hull one spot further back, and just as crucially for Town fans, nine points ahead of unlucky 13th placed Norwich City.

Walters said: “We are where we want to be right now.

“There is a bit of a gap now and we need to keep it that way.”

Although six clubs have a game in hand over Town, Walters is happy with the points in the bank.

He said: “Every time we win it puts the clubs below us under pressure to win as well. We have to keep plugging away because we know there is a long way to go yet.”

The former Hull City striker is well aware of how volatile the Championship is this season and how quickly things can change but insists town are in a prime position.

Walters added: “You can soon drop down the table five or six places if you lose a game or two but wins over Palace and Blackpool have kept us right up there.”

The Ireland B international is also looking to push his way into the full Republic set up now that Giovanni Trappatoni has taken charge.
