THE relegation trapdoor opened a little wider last weekend for Mersea Island after defeat against Norwich and the club admitted it has been trying to punch above its weight this season.

The Islanders have been far from disgraced by their opponents this season and have often only lost out by the odd point but with the club five points adrift at the bottom of the league relegation looks all but certain.

However, chairman Colin Ainslie believes Mersea are capable of coming back next year.

“The problem we've got is that we are a small club compared to a lot of other teams in the division,” he said. “Each match is like a cup final for us and while you can pull off the odd surprise, over the course of season it's almost impossible to maintain.

“We have a relatively small squad as well but we've not been disgraced. I think we'll be a better club for it next season.”
