History was made at Foxhall Stadium when the Ipswich venue hosted the initial stage of the first- ever East Anglian Championship to be run over two separate meetings on two different days and at two different venues.

The Superstox were the formula chosen to try out the system, with part one at Ipswich and part two at Yarmouth the next day. A good entry of 37 cars raced at Foxhall, with this many cars and perfect track conditions, it was always going to be fast and furious.

Even so, nobody could have predicted the dramatic pile up involving Andy Bartlett and English champion Chris Bradbury as early as lap three which, even by Superstox standards was as spectacular as they come.

Chelmsford's Shaun Brooker eventually won the race, nipping through when Tich Gardner and Martyn Brooker clashed as they disputed the lead.

Gardner went well again in heat two, but the Ipswich driver had to be content with second place again, but he didn't score in the evening's final, which again went to Brooker although the drive of the night came from Bartlett who managed to repair his car from that first race crash, and then get second from 23 on the grid.

Two very quiet heats for the 2L Hotrods saw Sudbury's Neil Anderton cross the line first in one of them, but he was penalised a place for some contact, which was the nearest the locals got to a win all evening, until Peterborough driver Jonathan Field briefly took the lead in an exciting final where the lead changed hands several times over the last few laps, Field eventually having to settle for fourth place in a blanket finish involving the first five cars.

Around 50 Rookie Bangers provided all their usual action; these are usually all local line ups, which often adds to the rivalry.

Rather unusually nobody overturned but it was still lively enough with plenty of pushing and shoving much in evidence.

Ipswich newcomers John Willings and Kevin Head both raced well; admittedly they did have two of the best cars out there with a pair of very quick VWs Scirrocos, but they still had to be driven, and driven quite skilfully at times to avoid getting caught up in all the action going on around them.

The Superstox drivers took the points scored at Ipswich with them to Yarmouth, where the points from two further heats were added to their Ipswich scores, the highest points scorer overall (Shaun Brooker) starting in pole position for the championship.

Felsham driver Gary Sparkes, who didn't race at Ipswich, chose Yarmouth for his comeback meeting after a year racing in another class, qualified fourth on the grid and then went on to take the championship. Brooker was second and Hertfordshire's Jim Bamford third.
