JERMAINE Wright echoed the thoughts of thousands of Ipswich fans as he looked back on a Euro glory night.

"To be honest, I think Inter tried to take the mickey and came unstuck," said the Town midfielder in a frank assessment of the Italians' approach to a gripping UEFA Cup clash.

"They left out a lot of players and I got the impression they thought they could take us lightly and still win. When I realised how they were treating us I was always confident we could win.

"Sure, they have some great players, but they are individuals, whereas we played as a team. It was 11 v 11 and collectively we were better. We gave them a bit of a lesson."

Ipswich added another famous scalp to a growing collection as they extended their unbeaten home record in Europe to 28 games, stretching back 39 years.

Inter were minus big-money strikers Ronaldo and Christian Vieri, who are both recovering from injuries, while Uruguayan attacker Alvaro Recoba was absent because of this week's World Cup play-offs against Australia.

French midfielder Stephane Dalmat was also excused the trip to England to enable him to return home to be with his sick mother.

While Inter did not live up to their tag as favourites to win their first Scudetto in 13 years, Ipswich's stirring display belied their lowly position in the Premiership.

A run of 11 games without a win has left them stranded second from bottom, but they looked nothing like relegation candidates in last night's pulsating second round, first leg, clash.

Wright admitted: "It was so different from last Sunday and the defeat by Bolton. We started well, the crowd were right behind us and it was so like the way we played last season.

"Everyone worked their socks off and we were all helping each other out. After a result like that, the place is really buzzing again.

"Everyone was down after the Bolton game, but we had an attitude of no fear for the Inter game. We just wanted to get out there and enjoy it.

"Now we must aim to carry on the same way, starting at Middlesbrough on Sunday. If they were watching us on the box, they will know to expect a game up there.

"We need and want three points from Boro. The Inter result has given everyone a lift, but we must make sure we keep it going in the league."

Wright admitted he feared a goalless draw, despite Ipswich's non-stop energy and commitment that had the Italians at full stretch throughout the entire 90 minutes.

He went on: "You start to think the goal is not going to come, but it was worth waiting for. What a great header by Alun Armstrong, but it was only what we deserved.

"Collectively we stood firm. There were no sloppy goals given away and our defenders did a great job restricting Inter to so few chances.

"We know it will be different out in Milan at the San Siro. I think they may make a few changes to their team, for a start.

"But we have a clean sheet and if we nick one they will have to score three. We'll go there in a positive frame of mind, not just looking to hold on."
