IPSWICH Jaffa have produced some fine female runners in recent years, and Jenny Roberts is the latest to strike out on the winning trail.

Following in the footsteps of Jaffa club-mates like Val Jennings, Maria Davis, Jayne Williams and Helen Decker, there was no stopping Roberts as she cruised to victory at the annual Framlingham 10K road race, staged over a hilly two-lap course on Sunday.

Roberts clocked an excellent time of 38mins 01secs, which was four-and-a-half minutes clear of her nearest challengers. In fact, only 12 men finished ahead of her in the race.

It was Roberts' third win on the roads this year, following victories at the Newmarket 10K, where she registered 38.24 in July, and at the Joe Cox Memorial 10-miler at Stowmarket. She had also pipped club-mate Decker by one second to win a recent 5km event on the track at Northgate.

Amanda Henry, of Sudbury Joggers, enjoyed a high finish with 42.35 in second spot, but otherwise it was a Jaffa procession with Roberts' team-mates Vicky Reynolds and Julie Brown (leading veteran) in third and fourth respectively.

Meanwhile, David Miller recorded his seventh victory at the Framlingham event, following on from his previous triumphs in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006.

The Woodbridge Shuffler clocked 34mins 42secs, finishing 23 seconds ahead of runner-up Nick Earl, who was representing Reading AC.

Over-50 veteran Richard Jordan continued his good form with third spot overall in 35.16, while Ipswich Jaffa's Gavin Davies and Stowmarket's Roger Aldis also beat the 36-minute barrier.

For Miller, it was the 165th victory of his career and his 15th success of this year. He had maintained his training while away on holiday on the Isle of Wight, benefiting from a lot of hill work.

In the veteran age groups, the Jaffa duo of Scott McSephney (over-40) and Terry Back (over-50) were to the fore, while Reginald Woodard was the first over-60 finisher. Jaffa's Maureen Wright won the female over-60 equivalent.

The event was again sponsored by John Grose. There were 214 finishers.
