COLCHESTER United manager Paul Lambert believes that his side are playing at the “top of their game,” following a superb 5-0 win over Carlisle United.

The U's went goal-crazy against the Cumbrians.

David Perkins scored the opener before Mark Yeates netted a brace, and Dean Hammond and Sunday-Akanni Wasiu then scored late on to seal a memorable afternoon.

“It's a fantastic win for us. The lads were terrific, which they have been in the two weeks that I've been here,” enthused Lambert.

“It all went right for us today, and hopefully we can get this place really rocking in the weeks to come. The players have confidence in abundance at the moment; they are playing at the top of their game.

“I don't think the lack of a home win was preying on their minds, and I could have no influence on what happened before my arrival. I arrived just when the club was a little down.

“Now we need to go again at Northampton on Tuesday. Steven (Gillespie) might be doubtful after feeling his other hamstring.

“The early goal (from Perkins) was important, but it's not even over when you get to 3-0 up. That is still catchable.

“Mark Yeates took his goals well, Chris Coyne was terrific on his return to the team, Dean Gerken made a world-class save and Pat Baldwin is also playing at the top of his game. But then I could mention absolutely everyone!”
