IPSWICH Wanderers secretary and general manager Martin Head says that it is hard to envisage the day when the Humber Doucy Lane-based Jewson League club will win anything.

"We are completely overshadowed by Ipswich Town," he said. "We have difficulty in attracting sponsorship and also spectators through the turnstile. We also struggle to find enough people to run the club."

Head has given his backing to two of his sons, Simon and David, moving from Wanderers to Harwich and Parkeston.

"The parent in me would like to continue watching them both play for Wanderers," added Head. "It has been a privilege to do so for the last few years – but on a footballing front I can understand their reasons. Exciting things are happening at Harwich and even though they play in the same Jewson LeaguePremier Division as Wanderers they have far more potential.

"I can't see us winning anything, but Harwich have much better prospects. The boys have a reasonable financial deal and Harwich are always likely to be a bigger club than Wanderers."

Head, a former manager of Harwich, went on: "I enjoy working with Wanderers but I have said that there will be games where I will want to watch my boys in action.

"I am not knocking Wanderers. To finish 10th and 12th in the Premier Division over the last two years is as big an achievement as a club like Wroxham winning the championship.

"We may have a Jewson League Premier Division side on the pitch but we have an SIL one off it. It is

tremendous what has been achieved in the circumstances.

"With very little interest being shown from the town of Ipswich, though, we will always struggle to make an impact."

A proposed link-up with Ipswich Town did not materialise where the Premiership club pulled out of a

possible deal to buy that Wanderers' ground they currently rent off building company SEH Ltd.

This could well have provided the finance to make a big impact in regional football although there was always a concern about any loss of identity.

Wanderers are still connected with Town through their PASE School of Excellence with 40 boys now studying full time at Humber Doucy Lane under director of football Colwyn Rowe.

"Colwyn, who has appointed two new part time coaches, will produce some quality young players and the question is whether we are capable of holding on to them," added Head.

"The signs are very encouraging though and next season our reserve team that plays in Division One of the Kent Blaxill Border League will be made up mainly of youth players."

Former Cambridge United player Lenny Pack has moved from Woodbridge Town to join the Wanderers PASE scheme as a part time coach.

n THREE new teams have entered the First Division of the Jewson League next season – Leiston Town, Histon Reserves and King's Lynn Reserves. Chatteris Town have dropped out.

Former Metaltec SIL club Leiston have some work to do this summer to bring their facilities up to Jewson League levels.

n HADLEIGH United report that goalkeeper Wayne Donovan, a target for Felixstowe and Walton United, has signed 2001/02 forms to stay with the Millfield club.

n WHITTON United have announced that all current team managers have been appointed for the forthcoming season.

Nick Bartlett and Kevin Cunningham will run the first team, Stefan Bunn and Darren Porter the reserves while Kenny White and Lee Steward are running the third team.

George Giddings is in charge of the U18s and Mick Brill and Steve Yarnton the U16s.

Training will commence on Saturday, July 7 and will be every Saturday at 2.30 and Wednesday at 7.30 until the season starts. Old and new players welcome.

The club is holding a fun day on Sunday, August 26. This will include a car boot sale, many stalls and a seven-a-side tournament.
