SIL LEAGUE

East Bergholt 3 Stonham Aspal 2

In a prequel to their Omnico Cup meeting after Christmas both teams performed well in a close match. The home side were looking to complete a 100% record for November and almost took the lead in the first minute when Powell's downward header was cleared off the line. Gedny then went close before Stonham had a very good spell. G. Brown forced a good save from Andrews and Bennett shot over when well placed. Flatman then saw his curling effort from twenty yards go just past the post. Andrews saved bravely at Moye's feet before the game changed with Bergholt taking the lead, Wilcox guiding a header through to Gedny to round Lay and pass into an empty net. Powell should have extended the lead before Moye shot wide at the other end after Bennett's flick had set him free. As it was Bergholt were not to be denied and scored their second when Turner headed home at the far post following good work from Gedny.

At the start of the second half only a fine last ditch tackle from J.Jorgensen stopped Moye scoring before the home side's front three combined to increase their lead. Wilcox found Turner with a fine through ball and his cross was volleyed home by Gedny. Lay who had a good game in goal for Stonham denied Gedny and M. Jorgensen in quick succession before the visitors pulled one back against the run of play. Ellis and Andrews getting in a tangle dealing with a through ball to allow Flatman to slot into an empty net. Gedny, searching for his hat trick headed wide from Turner's cross and when he did hit the target Lay saved again.

On seventy five minutes G. Brown should have done better with a header for Stonham although they did pull another back when Harrall's corner curled straight in. Bergholt could have panicked at this stage but they surged back to try and extend their lead with Lay saving well from Wilcox. Hewitson finally got a header past Lay, but a defender on the line headed clear. The game ended with the home side in the ascendancy and earning a victory to put them second in the league in a match excellently controlled by referee Sale and his team.
