The midfielder, who had a successful spell on loan at Portman Road earlier this term, admitted: "It was ironic that I should make my debut here.

"I still have a number of ties and good friends at Ipswich, but I now have a job to do for Wigan.

"It is a great move for me and I am looking forward to the challenge. It was not the best debut in the world, but the main thing was to win and I have to be happy with the result.

"I was also happy with the reception I got from Ipswich fans and I still think Town will make the play-offs. There are a lot of talented players at the club."

Nathan Ellington formed a deadly front partnership with Jason Roberts with both scoring a goal in Wigan's 3-2 victory.

And he predicted better things to come for the pair.

"Our style of play will suit the Premiership," said Ellington. "Jason and I played successfully together when we were both with Bristol Rovers.

"I put in a request to the gaffer to sign him from West Brom and I feel sure we can score goals together in the top flight. We were not at our best, but did more than enough to win."
