Michael Comber struck another century as Suffolk made the most of some good batting conditions on day one of their final Minor Counties Championship fixture of the season, against Hertfordshire, at Copdock.

Ironically, the visitors had won the toss and elected to field, but they must have been regretting that decision by the end of the day, with Suffolk rattling up 422 for six declared from 90 overs.

The hosts did lose two early wickets, with opener Nathan Poole dismissed for a duck, and Martyn Cull then trapped leg before for five, to leave the score on 22 for two.

But Tom Huggins and Tom Rash began the fightback in impressive fashion, before Comber took charge, with late support provided by Simon Guy, Sasha Ward and James Poulson.

Huggins and Rash shared a partnership of 119 runs for the third wicket to put Suffolk in the driving seat.

Huggins made 72, which included 13 boundaries, before he was out lbw off Simon White, but the Bury skipper’s exit merely paved the way for Comber to come to the crease.

Rash and Comber added a further 75 for the fourth wicket, before Rash became the third lbw victim of the day. His patient innings of 68 spanned more than three hours.

The hard-hitting Guy, in harness with Comber, increased the run-rate with a quickfire stand of 54 for the fifth wicket, with former Yorkshire wicketkeeper Guy contributing 40.

His entertaining knock, off just 27 deliveries, featured a six and five boundaries.

Suffolk continued to pile on the runs, with a 97-run partnership between Comber and Ward (57no) boosting the total to 367, at which point Comber was bowled by Tanveer Sikander for 114.

Comber’s latest knock, off 136 balls and including three sixes and 12 fours, followed on from his fine 194 in the win over Northumberland last month.

Hertfordshire ended the first day on 41 for no wicket in reply.
