IAN Miller will pen his first professional contract tomorrow after Bury Town and Ipswich Town agreed terms last night.

The 22-year-old West Suffolk College lecturer is set to sign an initial deal until the end of the season after impressing for and against the Blues reserves over the past three months.

While the transfer fee is undisclosed, it is understood the clubs have agreed a four-figure sum, with add-ons for appearances, and a friendly at Ram Meadow, for the centre-half.

Miller, who lives in Marks Tey, last night spoke of his delight at being given the chance to join the Championship outfit and insisted it was not enough just to be handed a contract.

He said: “This is something I never expected to happen to me.

“I'm not going to Ipswich to make up the numbers or be a bit-part player. This is a fantastic opportunity and I don't want to let myself or anyone else down and I don't intend to be second best.

“When the training group splits into two I don't want to be among the reserves looking across at the first team - I want to be part of that group.”

Bury Town chairman Russell Ward last night predicted Miller would make his Championship debut this year and go on to win an extended contract.

He said: “I'm thrilled for Ian. He has gone there to be a first team player and he really deserves this. He was well coached here at Bury but under Jim Magilton and his staff at Ipswich Town I know Ian will benefit even further and will progress to be a Championship player.

“It is a good deal for Bury and for Ian. As Jim Magilton said, he has unearthed a real gem.

“Ian has been brilliant for us at Bury, thoroughly professional and has done a great job, so we all wish him every success.”

Miller has played nearly 300 games for the Ryman League Division One (North) club, and was twice their player of the year.
