THERE was joy and despair for two Felixstowe Ferry teams that were both playing in the seventh round of the Mail on Sunday Classic last weekend.

With both teams having home advantage, the men made further progress by beating Crondon Park from Essex two-and-a-half matches to one-and-a-half, but for the ladies there was heartbreak after going out in a sudden-death play-off to another Essex team, Thorndon Park.

After the two teams had finished all square, the rules state that the players in the last of the four matches should play sudden-death.

Suffolk's Sharon Luckman, who had already beaten Thorndon Park's former Curtis Cup player Sally Barber to square the match for Felixstowe, had to play each other again in the sudden-death play-off.

This time Barber exacted her revenge by winning at the third extra hole and leaving Felixstowe's ladies to reflect on what might have been.

As far as the men are concerned, they are now just two rounds away of playing in the national finals that will be held in Myrtle Beach, America later in the year.

They are currently awaiting to find out who their next round opponents will be, but will two three handicappers and the other two players off five in the side, they could take some beating.
