SPEEDWAY legend Billy Sanders should still be alive today.

So says his former Ipswich Witches promoter John Berry.

Sanders, who was became a hero riding for the Witches between the years 1972 to 1985, committed suicide at the age of 29 in April 1985.

He has marital problems that led to his loss of life at the peak of his career.

And Berry, who was his Ipswich promoter during all Sanders' time at Foxhall Stadium, said today that it could have been prevented.

“I wish I had done more,” said Berry. “I was left with great sadness and emptiness, and a constant wish that I had read the signs better.

“The cry for help came too late and it had not been clear enough to anyone just how desperate that cry was.”
