CRICKET: Needham Market's first taste of the Federation Cup saw them pull off the shock result of the first round on Sunday.

Taking on a Bury ST Edmunds 2nd XI who play in Division One of the Two Counties, Suffolk Alliance Section C minnows Needham looked to be in trouble when they could only muster 88 for eight from their 40 overs against a useful Bury attack. Opener Simon Mortimer, with 19, and R Kemp, with 16 not out, were the only batsmen to reach double figures at the Victory Ground.

But Andy Burgess dismissed both openers, Bob Godall picked up three for five in the middle and M Hunt grabbed four for six at the end to send Bury packing for just 80.

Now Bury, who have won the cup twice and reached the final five times, must play in the Plate while Needham take on Bourne Vale in the quarter-finals.

Caribbeans were another Alliance team to claim a scalp from a higher division. Felixstowe Corinthians, from the Suffolk Premier Division and winners of the competition in 1997, were bowled out for 99 in reply to a Caribbeans total of 120 for six. Dave Claxton, who had earlier top-scored with 27, took five for 24.

Elveden's trip across the county to Melton paid off with a five-wicket win over St Audry's. Doug Andrews scored an unbeaten 52 for the home side, but five of the visitors topped 20 to secure victory for last year's runners-up.

Worlingworth, winners in 2000, made short work of Martlesham, dismissing them for 125 (Zach Rush five for 25) and then knocking off the runs in 21 overs, Eric Davy (52) and Dave Courteen (42 not out) sharing an opening stand of 82 in 12 overs.

Walsham, winners for the first two years of the event in 1994 and 95, rattled up 193 for nine (Tony Davies 48, Nigel Bryant 33) and then whipped Nowton out for 41 (Stephen Miller three for seven, Chris Manning three for 11, Mark Rothon three for 17).

Great Yeldham had double-booked and must rearranged their match with Felixstowe while Stowupland and Bourne Vale received first-round byes.

Saturday's wet weather wiped out most of the Suffolk Premier League programme, but newcomers Kedington and Wortham defied the weather to make their first appearances.

Steve Bartram was again the backbone of the Wortham innings of 154 for seven, top-scoring with an unbeaten 75. In reply M Giles made an identical score, but he received a little more support from P Discol (27) and D Johnston (25) to set up a five-wicket win.

Sudbury Police had very mixed fortunes. On Saturday they were on the receiving end as Worlington II rattled up 308 for five on the way to a 183-run win, but on Sunday they beat Kesgrave by 72 runs.

Robert Ford (106), Simon Heather (54) and Matthew Bacon (52) were in form for Worlington, with Barry Byford's 47 the only score of note in the Police reply.

Next day, however, Phil Cowey (97 not out) and Steve Crouch (63) helped push the Police total up to 180 for five, and Kesgrave were held to 108 for nine in reply, Dave Bird claiming four for 22 and Andy Smethurst three for 32.
