IPSWICH Wanderers' chairman Ed Nicholls has said the Ridgeons League, Premier Division club had an offer they could not refuse for star striker Rene Swann.

Swann has moved across town to rejoin Whitton United, who play in the First Division of the Ridgeons League.

He scored at the weekend in the 3-0 home win over Yarmouth.

Nicholls has earlier said that he planned to hold Swann to his contract after his controversial exit from Humber Doucy Lane.

However, Nicholls said today: “We had a good offer for him and we could not turn it down.

“I stand by my opinion that Rene did not handle things the right way and there were other issues that are best left unsaid.”

Nicholls was pleased with the effort shown in two away wins at Wisbech and Diss that followed Swann's departure.

“The players fought for everything and the team spirit was excellent,” said Nicholls, who is looking to carry on working with manager John Clarkson in 2007/08.

“John has been like a breath of fresh air and I am very pleased with what he has done.

“I can work with John and hope he will continue into next season.

“We both joined Wanderers last

summer and I think we have taken the club a stage further.

“We have come out of the Rene Swann saga stronger for the experience.”
