A GENEROUS declaration proved the downfall of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Over-50s against a younger Witham side.

Set 195 to win, the hosts scraped to a two-wicket success in the last over, following an unbeaten 58 by Leroy Facey.

Earlier, John Stuck, Alan Cooke and Clive Claireaux were the top scorers for the Two Counties side who declared on 194 for seven.

The annual fixture was for the Ernie Nicholls memorial trophy which was presented by his widow, Mary, to Witham.

Two Counties Over-50s 194 for 7 dec (Stuck 60, Cooke 44, Claireaux 32 n.o., Sullivan 3 for 31). Witham 195 for 8 (Facey 58 n.o., Wakelin 42, Simmons 3 for 57, Turley 2 for 31). Witham won by 2 wkts.

On Saturday, the Two Counties side plays its final games in the triangular Suffolk Federation of Cricket Leagues tournament at Bury St Edmunds' Victory Ground.

Their side is: Phil Cox (capt), Graham Penny, Stuart Carpenter, Richard Kemp (all Long Melford), Martin Blackwell, Mike Thew (Coggeshall), Stuart Berger (Halstead), Sylvester McKnight (Boxted), George Bibby (Mistley), Alan Cooke (Copdock & Old Ipswichians), Brian Turley (Brightlingsea). 12th man: Brian Robinson (Braintree). Scr: Kenny Sparkes. Match manager: Geoff Newman.

DESPITE a fine unbeaten half-century by Clive Claireaux, the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Over-50s side just failed to beat Mistley in the Essex side's cricket week.

The Two Counties rattled up 204 for six while Mistley were indebted to Martin Lambert's undefeated 62 as Chris Simmons, Graham Penny and Phil Jones took seven of the eight wickets to fall.

Afterwards, Two Counties match manager Geoff Newman was presented with a painting by Mistley stalwart George Bibby to recognise his achievements in being involved with a side who are the long-serving fixture in the cricket week calendar.

Two Counties Over-50s 204 for 6 dec (Claireaux 62 n.o., Stuck 40, Philpott 35, Ric Mills 2 for 25, Rob Mills 2 for 44, Dove 2 for 45). Mistley 150 for 8 (Lambert 62 n.o., Simmons 3 for 40, Jones 2 for 28, Penny 2 for 46). Match drawn.
