A new Youth Hockey League kicked off last weekend with over 150 young hockey players involved.

The Mick McNeil Sports youth Hockey League is the brainchild of Hockey England regional development manager Charlie Farrow.

"There has been the need to organise more competitive opportunities for young hockey players in the area for some time and I hope that the partnership formed between local clubs and McNeil Sports will see the league become part of the local scene for many years."

The league, featuring local clubs, will be played monthly with matches featuring teams in Under-9 mixed, Under-11 mixed, under-13 girls, under-13 boys and under-15 boys. The county has existing girls' under-17 leagues.

Ipswich and East Suffolk took on local rivals Ipswich at Copleston and despite the constant rain the young players had a great time, with both clubs winning two of the four games played.

The Ipswich-based rivals also had an under-7 game featuring players as young as four, the future of the game looks bright!

Other clubs taking part are Bury St Edmunds, Colchester and Felixstowe.

In the week's other games Bury won two of the three games with Felixstowe, with the Seasiders successful in the under-15 match.
