THERE was a disappointingly low entry of 36 players for the ninth East Anglian Anthony Nolan Golf tournament held at Rushmere.

But a total of approximately £950 was raised for the Anthony Nolan Trust to help those suffering from leukaemia.

A three-day golf break in France was the prize for the winning pair and that went to Martin Plumbly, a 12-handicapper from Ipswich and his partner Andy Buxton (Wensum Valley), playing off 19, who amassed 74 points in the aggregate Stableford competition.

Rushmere's Trevor Stiff and Ian Biddle were beaten on countback, but their reward is free entry into the Anthony Nolan Golf Classic to be held at Sunningdale's Old Course on Tuesday, October 1.

Two other Rushmere stalwarts, Len Garrett and Buster Knock, were third but lost out on countback to the first and second pairs.

Rushmere veteran Brian Perks will also be Sunningdale-bound in October after winning the individual prize with 41 points off his 19 handicap. The runner-up was Phillip Allen with Felixstowe's Peter Hope third.

The nearest the pin prize at the 14th was won by Paul Button, another Rushmere member, whose tee shot finished 59" from the flag.

The event was jointly sponsored by Suffolk Offset, the Martlesham printers and Arena Travel of Felixstowe.

A date has already been set for next year's tournament at Rushmere – Friday, May 2.
