HOWZAT for a record!

A Suffolk schoolboy cricketer has knocked the record books for six – when he hammered SEVEN sixes off an over in a match on Sunday.

Spencer Chorlton, 17, said: "I thought I'd have a go and tried to hit everything – and it just about came off," he said.

The Framlingham College sixth-former, who captained his school XI this year, was playing for Yoxford against Mallards in Section A of the Medite Suffolk Alliance.

Pity poor bowler Andy Shaw, though – he was bowling his very first over in his debut season for Mallards.

He bowled a no-ball to give Chorlton the chance of another six, bringing the total number of runs off the over to 43.

The in-form batsman launched the final delivery of the over towards mid-wicket and he was actually caught by Mike Bamford, but the fielder realised his feet were over the boundary and another six was awarded.

Chorlton, who plays for Suffolk Under-17s and Under-19s, raced from 50 to 100 in just 14 balls and ended up with 125 to his name – his first senior century.

Evening Star sportswriter Elvin King, who is also chairman of Ipswich and East Suffolk cricket club, said he had never heard of seven sixes being hit off an over before.

"I think it's an amazing feat – I'd be very surprised if it has happened before."

Hugh Chevallier, of cricket bible Wisden Almanac, said it was "very unusual" and worthy of inclusion in this year's edition but was unable to confirm its suspected record breaking status.

"It's certainly remarkable but we couldn't say it was definitely a record as there are no records kept of non first class cricket," he added.

First class big hitters include Sir Garfield Sobers and Indian batsman Ravi Shastri who both famously hit six sixes off an over.

In Suffolk Steve Witham earlier this season hit half a dozen sixes off one over for Cavendish Wanderers against Abberton.
