SIR Bobby Robson will be the star guest at a golf day at Seckford Golf Club to raise funds for his Ipswich Hospital charity.

The former England and Ipswich Town manager, who is now in charge at Newcastle United, will join golfers on the course next month for an event that will hopefully raise a great deal of money for the Sir Bobby Robson Jubilee Appeal.

The fund, launched by Ipswich Hospital's League of Friends, aims to raise £55,000 to buy equipment for consultant Huw Davies whom Robson credits with saving his life after diagnosing him with cancer in 1995.

The charity golf day will be held on Thursday, September 12 and promises to be an excellent day.

Staging an event of this size is a great testament to the improvements made at Seckford over the past 18 months. Visitors will be impressed by the condition of the course and the new Terrace Restaurant that will host the evening dinner.

Teams of four are invited to enter and the cost is £250 per team. For that players will get a bacon roll and coffee on arrival, a nine-hole Texas Scramble in the morning, a buffet lunch, 18 holes in the afternoon, a champagne reception, dinner and prize giving. Sir Bobby will be the main speaker.

Anyone wishing to enter a team should contact Terry Mitchell on 01394-388000 as soon as possible.

Arrangements for the day are well under way, and Seckford's general manager, Nic Grundtvig said it was a great honour to be hosting Sir Bobby.

"He has achieved so much for Ipswich through football and still holds the town very close to his heart," said Nic. "It is typical of him to want repay something back to the community, so he was only too happy to put his name to the Jubilee Fund at Ipswich Hospital.

"The golf day is a major part of the appeal's fund-raising programme and we were delighted that it will be held here."

Sir Bobby is keen for as many local teams to enter as possible, and will be pleased to meet with each of them on the day.

The Newcastle boss was managing Portugese giants Porto when Mr Davies broke the news that he was suffering from a rare form of cancer that would spread unless it was removed.

He was told that if he did not have the malignant melanoma removed from his face he would not see the season out.

Sir Bobby has never forgotten the excellent treatment he received at Ipswich Hospital. As well as putting his name to the Jubilee Appeal, that will buy a special double-headed microscope used in reconstructive oral surgery, he has agreed to become the League of Friends patron.
