Ipswich Witches' chances of play-off qualification received a boost last night when they enjoyed a welcome 47-42 victory at near neighbours Peterborough.

In a meeting that had everyone on the edge of their seats, the advantage swung one way and then the other, before the Suffolk side took control of the meeting with a succession of heat advantages late on, writes Steve Waller.

An opening heat maximum from Richie Worrall, in a new Premier League track record, and Ritchie Hawkins, followed by a 4-2 from Adam Ellis and Cameron Heeps in the next, saw the visitors leading the Panthers by six points after just two heats.

Cameron Heeps crashing out, when leading heat six, and then Gino Manzares coming a cropper in heat seven looked like it may de-stabilise the Suffolk side’s cause, with the home side pulling level, but Rohan Tungate and Heeps took them back in front with a heat nine 4-2.

Peterborough then took the lead for the first time with a maximum in the tenth before Heeps and Morten Risager scored a 5-1 in heat 12 to put the Witches back in control and set them on their way to victory.

This was sealed in the penultimate heat with Heeps defeating Barrett in a match race after Ellis crashed out and was excluded, with Ulrich Ostergaard also out after shedding a chain.

Team manager Brian Messenger who is still to be defeated after stepping into the role said: “It was a superb team effort with everyone showing a desire to win and doing their bit. The only disappointment was poor Gino who took a heavy fall and has knocked himself about a bit.”
