DAVID Starie, Suffolk's British and Commonwealth super-middleweight boxing champion, roared to a third round victory in Carnival City, South Africa last night.

The 26-year-od former Hurstlea-Kerridge Club of Needham Market amateur made short work of 38-year-old Bruno Godoy of Argentina.

Fierce blows had Godoy down in the first and second rounds. In the third he had him down again and won the contest on a technical knock-out.

Godoy claimed he had an injured ankle as the towel was thrown in by his corner.

"I'm well pleased. The bout didn't take much out of me and I can't wait to fight again," said Starie.

The next fightt will come in September when he defends the British and Commonwealth crowns against Neil Linford of Peterborough.

Starie's fight last night was in front of a big crowd and a large television audience. There are plans for him to go to South Africa again later this year to face a stiffer test in Carnival City, possibly a world title bid.

His opponent here may be either Eric Lucas of Canada or Dingaan Thobela of South Africa.

Thobella, the former WBC super-middleweight champion, is to challenge newly crowned champion Lucas in September.

Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman is already planning for Starie to meet the winner.

Starie's father Chris watched his son in action last night.
