Suffolk have been dealt a triple blow ahead of Sunday’s Unicorns Trophy quarter-final tie away to Berkshire at Falkland CC in Newbury.

Already without opening bowlers Matt Salisbury and Matt Wareing, Suffolk had included Matt Hunn in their 13-man squad.

However, Hunn, who is on a dual registration with Kent, has been recalled by the first-class county.

Former Essex bowler Salisbury is playing for Hampshire against South Africa A, after taking two wickets in three balls on his debut, including that of former England batsman Ian Bell, in the crushing win against Warwickshire.

Wareing, meanwhile, is ruled out by a back injury, so Frinton all-rounder Kyran Young, who made his debut against Buckinghamshire in the Unicorns Championship draw earlier this week, retains his place in the 13-man squad.

Suffolk coach Andy Northcote said of reaching the quarter-finals: “We have worked hard all winter, so it is great to see that the effort they have put in has been rewarded.

“It definitely helped that there was not much movement in the Trophy squad and availability was good throughout the campaign. Last year’s results were a little unkind as we competed in all the games but just could not get over the line in any of them.

“Having addressed these issues over the winter, mentally more than anything, we have qualified and are now into the business end of the competition for the first time in my tenure and the first time for the county since 2014.

“Anything can happen from here which makes the trip to Berkshire very exciting.

“A cracking all-round performance against Bucks in the three-dayer with a similar squad has given us added confidence going into the game against a side who have not lost in two years.

“We know we are right up against it, but I believe in the squad that if we play well we can beat anybody.”

Suffolk squad: Jaik Mickleburgh, Martyn Cull, Kyran Young, Ben Shepperson, Michael Comber, Tom Rash, Darren Batch, Adam Mansfield (capt & wkt), Jake Wakelin, Jack Beaumont, Ben Parker, Hugo Douglas.
