TRISTAN Steward, just 14, scored a remarkable unbeaten 126 to secure Stradbroke's place in the second round of the Medite Suffolk Alliance Cup on Sunday.

He hit 19 fours and two sixes in a total of 191 for six, with his county Under-15 colleague Sam Oyitch the next-best scorer with 22.

In reply Martlesham were restricted to 163 for five, with Richard Allport (49 not out) and Garry Venn (48) sharing a century partnership.

The closest finish of the day was at Ipswich School's Top Field, where Caribbeans beat Yoxford by one wicket.

The match ended in controversy as Yoxford claimed that Anthony Gibson had bowled one more than his allocation of eight overs.

They have lodged an appeal with the committee, and chairman John Boast said: "We will consider the matter over the weekend but it seems that whatever we do we will please some people and upset others.

Caribbeans spokesman Everett Davis said: "If Anthony bowled an extra over it was a genuine mistake. We will wait to see what the committee have to say about it."

The match itself was a cracker. Yoxford were bowled out for 157 (Julian Emeny 44, C Lloyd 26, Dave Brook 20) and Caribbeans reached 158 for nine (Anthony Gibson 36, K Farrell 32). Lloyd completed a good day by taking five for 15.

Sudbourne Hall, cup winners for the past three seasons, kept up their hopes of making it four in a row – but only just.

They were grateful to Matt Brackenbury's 51 for reaching a total of 110 (Darren Philpott three for 14, Roger Riley three for 29) and scraped home by just three runs as the home side were put out for 107. David Gooderham top-scored with 23, while Tom Jenkin picked up three for 37.

Sudbourne Hall are away to old rivals Bawdsey in the second round.

Easton, beaten finalists last season, racked up the biggest total of the round against Halesworth.

Richard Fernley (62), Dave McMillan (54), Chris Branch (50) and Will Thomas (49) combined to hoist the total to 259 for five. Halesworth were then bowled out for 83 in reply.

Felixstowe Corinthians will meet Easton in the next round. The Corinthians, who are celebrating their Jubilee season, won by seven runs in a close finish against Needham Market.

M Smith's 31 was the main contribution as Corinthians were all out for 96, and despite an unbeaten 38 from Simon Mortimer, Needham were bowled out for 89 in their turn. C Laws took three for 16.

Adrian Smith scored his maiden first-team half-century to help Melton St Audry's tally 196 for five against Saxmundham. Doug Andrews (44), Malcolm Grubb (28), Keith Wright (24) and Mike Cattermole (23 not out) added to the total.

Saxmundham were bowled out for 112, David Driver (22) and Ben Vincent (21) providing the resistance as Conrad Wright (four for 16), Grubb (three for 16) and Marc Younghusband (three for 23) shared the wickets, the first two also taking five catches between them.

Kevin Williams scored 84 as Mallards totalled 147 to beat Woodbridge by 40 runs and Elmsett accounted for Pettistree by 67 runs, A Miles top-scoring with 46 out of a total of 134. Martin Grayling then took four for 10 to help dismiss the visitors for 67 despite David Thurkettle's 35.

In League action, St Audry's gained a narrow three-wicket win over Bawdsey in Section A. Opener John Rose scored 45 at the start and Neil Emmens was 24 not out at the end of a Bawdsey innings of 137 for eight.

In reply Doug Andrews (31), Adrian Smith (30) and Malcolm Grubb (33 not out) carried St Audry's home despite David Mark's burst of four for 10.

Dave Griffiths scored a half-century to set up BT's Section B win over AXA/DBSL, and Gary Forster did the same as Brantham beat Nacton.
