WATER POLO

IPSWICH waterpolo club has realised a gloomy start to the winter season with a hard-fought defeat against Thetford and Norwich.

A young but determined side played hosted to the full strength Norfolk team at Crown Pools.

From the very outset Ipswich showed true grit and enthusiasm in their campaign for glory, but against the senior full-compliment squad it was always going to be a hard task.

Ipswich youths Owen Stephens and David Orchard worked hard to prove their place in the home squad.

Owen defended well against bigger and stronger senior opponents, while David created several opportunities at the front.

Also on good form, Andy Slater demonstrated his versatility with solid performances both as goalkeeper and on the pitch.

Goals came with less frequency than the home side would have liked, but they were produced with great tenacity and skill.

Clearly the younger members proved themselves to be knocking hard on the door of the senior squads.

In the end the visitors deservedly triumphed with a full-time score of 9-4. The final result was no disgrace and Ipswich can look forward to an increasing contribution from our young county stars of tomorrow.

IPSWICH Water Polo Club's anticipated game against Clacton on October 31 was cancelled.

The first Winter League game takes place at home to Basildon on November 12th.
