TOMMY Miller checked in at Portman Road today and promised: “I'll get you goals.”

Miller, 28, rejoined Ipswich after a free transfer from Sunderland, the club he joined from Town two years ago.

It will actually be his third time on the books as Miller was rejected as a schoolboy because he was regarded as too small but he proved people wrong by going on to carve a reputation with Hartlepool, to whom then boss George Burley paid £750,000 in 2001.

Current manager Jim Magilton said: “Tommy's back and we are delighted to have him. We've got him at a very good age where he is reaching maturity as a footballer.

“Speaking personally it was only at 29 or 30 that I really saw the full picture and developed a real understanding of the game.

“For the last two years Tommy has been a bit of a bit-part player. Things didn't work out but these things happen. It was the same for me at Sheffield Wednesday then I decided to come here.

“I'm looking forward to working with him. Tommy needs to be in an environment where he feels settled and in my view we have got an absolute steal.

“He's going to give us goals, something I've been looking to bring into the team, especially in midfield.”

Miller contributed 15 goals in the 2004/2005 season before exercising his right, since he was out of contract at the time, to move on a free transfer.

But Sunderland were relegated from the Premiership in his first season and last term, with Roy Keane at the helm, they won the Championship without Miller as a regular choice.

Miller said: “I'm delighted to be coming home I had four great years here and the gaffer knows what I can do.

“He got the best out of me when he was on the pitch alongside me and I think it can be the same again now he is the manager.”

Asked about Town's prospects for the new season, he added: “Ipswich will do well. I know Jim is still looking to bring in a couple of players and he has already brought back Pablo (Counago) and a good goalkeeper in Neil Alexander.

“I will score the goals to help to push this team forward. As far as I'm concerned it's onwards and upwards.”

Miller explained that he rejected other offers to re-join Ipswich, adding: “I was quite settled in the north-east and I could have stayed a lot nearer there.

“I saw the manager and the chairman's drive and what they wanted for this club - that's what convinced me to come back.

“It's not round the corner but I know the place and the fans, and I'm delighted to be back.”
