CLUB cricketers will be anticipating better luck this weekend after wet weather washed out most of last Saturday's matches.

Following a week of hot sunshine and clear blue skies, rain arrived right on cue to make it a thoroughly depressing afternoon and evening for players and officials in the East Anglian Premier League and Hargreaves Two Counties Championship.

One team left feeling particularly down were Clacton, who were on course to pick up a vital EAPL victory at home to Cambridge and Godmanchester.

The Essex coast missed the worst of the weather until later in the day when the home side was 32 for one chasing just 94 for victory.

Suffolk bowler Gary Kirk was in miserly form taking three wickets for 21 runs from 17 overs before rain won the day eight overs into the Clacton reply.

They managed to finish the Two Counties Championship First Division game down the coast at Frinton where visitors Braintree beat the home side by 169 runs.

Witham beat Mildenhall II's in Division Two and further down the rankings there were victories for the Braintree and Maldon second elevens. Otherwise it was a blank day.

On Sunday, the weather improved with Browns reaching the last four of the Two Counties Senior Cup. Joe Lander scored an unbeaten 77 for the home side against Frinton as Browns reached 186 for nine.

Frinton found it difficult to score against a consistent attack and with Tan Shahid taking three wickets for 12 runs from his eight overs the Essex side were never really in the hunt.

Clacton knocked out Copdock after the Suffolk side was dismissed for just 73 runs and the other semi-finalists are Maldon and Wivenhoe.
