COLCHESTER survived a late scare to record their fourth successive win and once again draw level with third-place Norwich in the League One table.
Anthony Wordsworth's second goal in as many games put the U's 1-0 up in the 23rd minute and, although Southampton threw two strikers on in the second half, Steven Gillespie's counter-attack goal proved enough to seal them all three points.
The farcical final 10 minutes of this game were shrouded in such thick fog that, had it been pre kick-off, this match would almost certainly have been postponed.
With stoppage time approaching, former U's man Dean Hammond was fouled by keeper Ben Williams and Rickie Lambert converted the resultant spot-kick.
Colchester held out for the third game running though and sealed an ultimately deserved victory.
