COLCHESTER United laid down a huge signal of intent for the season with a fine 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic.

An own goal and a double from Kayode Odejayi sent former U's boss Phil Parkinson's high-flying Addicks to their first league defeat of the season and saw Colchester move up into fourth place.

The Essex side scored twice in space of three first half minutes to take command at the break.

First Spanish centre-back Miguel Llera headed into his own net following miscommunication with his keeper in the 29th minute. The defender - wearing rugby style head protection - was then nowhere near Kayode Odejayi when he powerfully fired under the keeper on the angle soon afterwards.

Charlton's defence couldn't handle the pace and strength of the on-loan Barnsley striker who added a third in the 57th minute. This time the Nigerian out-jumped keeper Rob Elliot before stabbing the ball into the unguarded net.
