ST Audry's Hospital Golf Club veterans have come up trumps this year raising money for charity.

A total of £1,000 was raised and at the veterans' Christmas golf day and lunch, a cheque was handed over to John Wilson, a member of the Ipswich Friends Group of the East Anglia's Children's Hospices.

Brian Mercer who handed over the captaincy to Dennis Driver after a four-year stint said that the St Audry Hospital members had proposed that the children's' hospices be adopted as their charity.

The figure raised has increased each year in the last four years, and John Wilson said: "We rely on 85 per cent of our funds from voluntary contributions, and the balance is made up by the Government.

"It is very important to us to have local support. People are very generous like golf clubs, rotaries and different associations."

Brian Mercer was also the winner of the 18-hole Stableford with 40 points followed by Roy Palmer, 38, and Tony Robinson, 36.

The longest drive was won by Ashley Keeble and Danny Drake won the nearest the pin prize.
