ON the evidence so far Jonathan Walters looks a failure.

But the man signed by Ipswich Town to boost their goal tally insisted today that fortunes will change.

The 23-year-old is still waiting to celebrate a single goal - either by himself or a team mate.

In his four starts so far Ipswich have failed to find the net.

The striker, who scored ten goals for League Two Chester City this season before being brought to Portman Road in the transfer window for a fee that can rise up to £200,000, brushed aside any fears that the drought will continue.

“Once we score one goal our fortunes will change,” is Walters' message to worried Town fans.

Ipswich travel to Southampton tomorrow, and the Birkenhead-born player is looking for a Championship pick-me-up.

“With no goals and only one point in my four Ipswich games, I have to admit I am desperate to get that out of the way.

“I am sure it will happen sooner rather than later, and hopefully at Southampton where we will not be fancied to get a result.

“We must keep on doing the same things and keep patient. The tide will turn, and it needs the ball entering the net off someone's backside - hopefully mine - to change our fortune. When we score first it will be a different game.”

Ipswich have now lost their last four league games, and still need 11 points from their last 13 league games to appear certain of staving off relegation.

They start tomorrow's game in 17th place and need to start calming a few nerves - with fears growing of a drop down to the third layer of English football for the first time in 50 years.

Town have gone five games since Alan Lee scored the last Town goal - a penalty in the FA Cup against Swansea.

And the last time they scored in open play was Danny Haynes' solo effort back on January 20 against Colchester.

“The ingredients are all here,” added Walters. “I am improving my partnerships with Alan and Danny Haynes and Billy Clarke. We have worked hard in training this week so that we can get that all-important goal tomorrow.”
