Ipswich-born duo Lewis Ludlam and Will Owen both played as England defeated Japan 59-7 in their opening game of the World Rugby Under-20s Championships, in Italy, on Tuesday afternoon.

Debutant Ludlam, the former St Joseph’s College pupil started at blind-side flanker with Owen, who studied at Framlingham College, playing open-side flanker.

England were 45-0 up at the break courtesy of tries from Stuart Townsend (2), Aaron Morris (2), George Perkins, Jack Walker and Tom Howe.

Japan tightened up in the second period following Sam Skinner’s early try just after the interval and got on the scoresheet themselves, before Will Witty finished things off for England, who face Wales next, on Saturday.

Ludlam plays for Northampton Saints, while Owen is contracted to Leicester Tigers.
